You've just bought a bouquet of beautiful flowers but don't know how to keep them looking fresh for as long as possible. From tulips to roses, many flowers can last longer than their usual vase life if given proper care and attention. In this article, we’ll explain how to preserve flowers and have them blooming for longer with a few simple steps. So, if you want to extend the life of your cut flowers, read on; we’ll share our knowledge on the best ways to take care of your fresh blooms.

How to handle your flowers

When handling your flowers, gently hold them by the stems. Avoid squeezing or compressing the stems as this could cause damage to the cells inside and eventual wilting. It is also important to display your flowers out of direct sunlight and away from heat sources. Direct sunlight and heat can cause flowers to dry out quickly, so always keep them in a low-lit area or room with natural lighting and cool temperatures.

How to keep the flowers hydrated

To keep your flowers properly hydrated, top off the water in the vase daily. Additionally, you can add flower food or plant food to the water to help preserve the flowers for longer. If using flower food, follow the instructions on the packaging for the best results.

If you want to provide extra hydration to your flowers, use a hydrating spray. Floral sprays provide nourishment and will help your flowers look better for longer. When using a hydrating spray, it’s best to spray them lightly and evenly on both sides of the petals.

If you want to give your flowers a longer-lasting effect, you can chill them before displaying them. This can be done by placing the flowers in a vase of cool or room-temperature water. Placing flowers in a cooler or refrigerator can also help extend their life. If you plan to chill your flowers, slowly letting them get used to the new temperature is important. Place them in the water for 15 minutes then move them to the cooler area for 15 minutes. Once removed, place them in a nice, clean vase and display them as usual.

Reviving your flowers when they start to wilt

If your flowers are starting to wilt, you can revive them with a simple trick. Use a pair of scissors to trim the stems of the flowers. This can help them rehydrate and promote proper water circulation. Before trimming, however, sanitise the scissors with rubbing alcohol or soap and water to avoid introducing any bacteria to the stems.

You can also add a few drops of lemon juice or vinegar to the water in the vase to help keep the water fresh and help eliminate bacteria growth. Just be sure only to add a few drops and not too much, or it can discolour the petals.

How to display your flowers and extend their lifespan

Finally, if you’re looking for a different way to display your flowers and extend their lifespan, you can consider drying them. This is a great way to preserve your flowers for long-term use. Drying the flowers requires using a flower drying agent, which can be purchased online or at most craft stores. Place the flowers into the agent and wait several days until they dry. Once dried, add them to a vase, wreath, or other craft of your choice.

No matter what kind of flowers you have, there are many methods for keeping them fresh and vibrant for longer. Before displaying them, check for any wilted or dead leaves and remove them to help the flowers stay healthy. You can also use flower food to encourage growth and promote a longer lifespan. Flower food will have instructions on the packaging, so follow them accordingly.

For extra protection, you can coat the stems of your flowers with a clear sealant. This will help keep the stems from drying out and help your flowers look amazing. Sealants are easy to find at most craft stores, and instructions will be provided on the packaging.

Changing the water in your vase every few days can help your flowers stay fresh. This can also help ensure they have enough nutrients and the water is not getting too cold or too warm. Lastly, placing the vase in a shaded area can help keep the flowers from getting too much direct sunlight, which can cause them to dry out quickly.

Following the tips listed above will help your flowers stay fresh and vibrant for longer. With the proper care, your flowers will last for weeks, and you can enjoy them for a prolonged time!

Making your own flower preservative

To get even more creative, you can make your own flower preservative. All you need is one part sugar, two parts lemon juice and two parts water. Simply mix it, and add it to your flowers' water. This homemade preservative will help your flowers last longer and make them look even more beautiful. Check out this article for more information on how to make your own flower preservative.

In addition to these tips, you can also look into special flower care products that are designed to help keep flowers fresh. These products typically contain special formulas that help seal in moisture and prevent the flowers from wilting.

No matter your chosen methods, keeping your flowers fresh is easier than you think. You can enjoy your beautiful bouquet for weeks with the right care and attention.

Love this article! I’ve found it helpful to use a quarter part bleach in the homemade flower food.

Also, trimming the stems and changing the water daily have helped extend the life of our bouquets.

I’ll try to chill before displaying a bouquet! Never heard of it, but it’s a great hack for this weather. Thanks!
